Paper music live

performance by Ivano Vitali
made on the 7th of June 2008 at 3 p.m.
in CODA Museum of  Apeldoorn

I have the objects for my performance in an old cardboard suitcase. My action starts by tearing off the pages of the newspapers, which I then transform into a thread. Subsequently I show the way I sew, I knit and crochet. The leitmotiv of my performance is the musical aspect of paper, i.e. I underline the sounds that paper makes in different moments. In the end I dress up in paper clothes. Time of the performance about 20 minutes.
Standing, in front of a microphone which I use to amplify all the noises and sounds that I produce with paper,
 I do the following actions:

1) I tear off the newspaper in a lot of stripes, pointing out the graphics in the air and the sounds of the paper being torn off.
2) I blow the stripes creating several sounds.
3) I wind up two stripes in order to show the way I create the thread without using water or glue.
4) I pluck different threads and create sounds
5) I create a hat with two pages of newspaper, needle and a thread.
6) I show the way I use a giant crochet-hook while making a tape-centre.
7) I create different sounds by shaking the pages of a newspaper.
8) I breathe and speak through the newspaper.
9) I show the way I knit with knitting needles and a ball of thread.
10) I put on a kitted and crocheted newspaper waistcoat.
11) I create sounds by hitting two cardboard tubes of different size.
12) I slip on great sleeves made with the pages of a newspaper.
13) I play two paper flutes of different size.

2) Soffio sulle strisce creando diversi suoni.
4) Pizzico fili diversi come fossero strumenti a corde e creo suoni

I am an ecologist, a sculptor and a performer. These three identities together led me to use  printed paper for my creations. I love feeling paper in my hands, hoping that other people can be inspired by my work to recycle. I love thinking that it is possible to save our ecosystem and that future generations will benefit from my work as an artist. I love seeing in my finished works their stiffnes, how similar they are to the trees they come from. I love creating sort of archives not only with my “tape-stries” and “tape-centres” but with every new work which  gathers stories, images, advertisements of the past.

I start by ripping a newspaper into stripes, then I make a thread out of them, overlapping the two ends of the stripes without using water or glue, but just twisting them together. I avoid using glue because the thread would lose softness and elasticity and, by drying, it would create corners difficult to be knitted. I never add colours: the only colours I use are those I find in  printed paper: sometimes the background is already coloured, other times I select pages of advertisements in a certain colour, which I then transform into balls. Once the balls are ready I knit the thread, or I crochet it or I weave it with a loom, following the traditional procedures and the projects  I have.

My works are poor and precious at the same time.
